Week 7- Five Commandments of Digital Marketing
When it comes to Digital Marketing, there are some guidelines, or commandments, that should be followed in order to maximize your views and consistently get your message and product out to more people. Following these commandments won't automatically make your marketing campaign better overnight, but following these commandments will help out in the long run. The five commandments of Digital Marketing are: not treating the digital aspect as an afterthought or secondary objective to your overall marketing campaign, don't be content with the same amount of followers, learning to measure right, don't let experience blind you, and learn the common language and terminology.
The first of these commandments is to not undermine the digital aspect of your campaign. With how trends are going in the past five years, Digital Marketing is become a more prominent aspect of marketing. Normally, the digital part was secondary to television and other forms of physical marketing. But now with the emergence of social media and the advances in technology the digital way is the easier and more convenient way to go. People now are more busy and always on the move, so they need to be marketed to in a fast and easy to understand format, and that is just what Digital Marketing does. So to make sure that today's people see and understand your message, the digital aspect shouldn't be undermined.
The next commandment is to not be content with the current number of followers or likes that you page gets. Complacency kills, and that is what is going to happen if you are content with the number of people that see your messages daily. There are always more people that can see or be marketed to, and if you are complacent you are losing out. It never hurts to reach out to more people, sometimes that is the only way to get your name out there in the market. Building your network is a very important aspect to marketing, and that cannot happen if you are content with the same number of current followers you have.
The third commandment is learning to measure right. This is a very important trait that needs to be mastered. This helps with seeing what is working and should be used continuously or what isn't really working and maybe should be redone or wiped out completely. A correct and unbiased measure will ensure that that company is seeing exactly what they are doing well and what they need to work on and improve. What people used to think is that either the number of clicks received was the only measure to how well something was working, but that is just giving false information. People could just click to get through it without even realizing what the ad was about or what its message was. Learning to measure correctly will help improve your marketing campaign by bounds and leaps.
The next commandment on the list is not being blinded by experience. Sure there are people that have been in the marketing business for upwards of 20 years, but what they don't understand is the evolution of the people that are being marketed to. 20 years ago, it was very simple, put out ads in newspapers, magazines, and on TV. Those were pretty much the only channels that were needed. Today with the advances in technology and the hustle and bustle lifestyle, those previous channels don't work the same as they did 20 years ago. So when someone who has marketing experience is trying to push one way of marketing, it isn't always right. Look deeper into what is being marketed and how it is being done to see if it will work with today's culture and society.
The final commandment is to learn the language and lingo of the current society. Nothing helps a marketing campaign more that sounding trendy and knowing how to speak in order to reach the maximum number of people. Today using terms and apps such as: memes, Snapchat, Instagram really help make a company sound trendy and hip to the current society. Since this generation is entwined with electronics and social media, knowing how to best communicate with them is a great way to get your message out and to make sure it gets understood.
Following these commandments will ultimately help your marketing campaign reach out to the most amount of people and convey your message. But learning how to follow these rules will take time and effort, but in the end, it will be worth it.
